Dance like a Goddess Tickets

An acclaimed Bharatnatyam traditional dancer Lata is on the verge of retirement but has no one to carry her legacy forward. Her son is part of an anti-caste radical theatre group that is in direct conflict with her traditional Brahminical repertoire of dance as they struggle to keep their art alive in a changing political climate. With her husband's political career gaining momentum, she witnesses her art being used as a political tool, a means of control over art and religion. Meanwhile, her son and his fiancé’s Dalit theatre movement, a beacon of hope for social change, is on the verge of being silenced, adding to the mounting tension. Lata must ally with her son and his fiancé to confront the God who seems possessed by the demon, but at a great cost.

Written and directed by eminent Indian playwright Mahesh Dattani whose works often explore themes of gender, sexuality, family dynamics, shaping modern Indian drama with his bold and theatrical storytelling. In 1998, he received the Sahitya Akademi award for his contribution to modern theatre.

Curated and produced by Adakar’s artistic director Saba Zaidi Abdi, a creative force with a long track record of achievements in theatre, films, and television. A National Award winning director, producers, designer and actor, Saba has hundreds of prestigious productions to her credits. She is instrumental in putting this extra ordinary theatre and workshop project with several years of hard work in bringing Mahesh Dattani to Australia.”
